OPT vs STEM OPT 90/150-Day Rules

Understand the 90-day post-completion OPT unemployment limit and the combined 150-day STEM OPT unemployment limit.

Quick answer

Post-completion OPT has a 90-day unemployment limit. STEM OPT allows a combined 150 days across the full post-completion OPT and STEM OPT period. The STEM extension does not reset your count to zero; days already used during Initial OPT still matter.

Calculate your unemployment days

The core difference

Initial post-completion OPT gives students up to 90 unemployment days during the OPT authorization period. A 24-month STEM OPT extension adds 60 more possible days, creating a combined 150-day limit across the full OPT plus STEM OPT timeline.

That combined structure is the part students often miss. If you used 40 unemployment days during Initial OPT, you enter STEM OPT with those 40 days already used.

Example

Suppose your Initial OPT starts July 1 and your first qualifying job starts July 21. That can create about 20 unemployment days. Later, you have a 12-day gap between jobs. You would enter STEM OPT with 32 days already used, leaving 118 days before reaching the combined 150-day limit.

The exact count depends on the dates you enter and whether each employment period qualifies.

Calendar days, not business days

Unemployment counting is a calendar-day issue. Weekends and holidays are not automatically excluded. If a Saturday and Sunday fall inside a gap with no qualifying employment, they may be part of the unemployment total.

This is different from premium processing, where business-day counting can matter.

What the calculator can and cannot do

The OPT and STEM OPT unemployment calculator can count date gaps, show remaining days, and separate Initial OPT from STEM OPT. It cannot decide whether a specific role qualifies, whether unpaid work is acceptable, whether self-employment is documented properly, or whether your SEVP record is correct.

Use the calculation to prepare better questions for your DSO.
