Start by turning every job gap into dates

OPT unemployment is easiest to misunderstand when students think only in job titles instead of dates. The tracker works because it asks you to enter the EAD period and each employment period, then shows the uncovered gaps. Those gaps can include weekends and holidays. Unlike premium processing, unemployment day tracking is not a business-day count.

Standard post-completion OPT allows up to 90 days of unemployment. With an approved STEM OPT extension, the limit is a combined 150 days across the overall OPT and STEM OPT timeline. That means days used during Initial OPT still matter during STEM OPT. A student who used 35 days before STEM does not start over at 150.

The difficult part is not always the arithmetic. The difficult part is deciding whether a role qualifies, whether unpaid work or self-employment is properly documented, whether an employer record should be updated, and whether a late SEVP Portal entry affects the official record. Those are DSO questions, not calculator questions.

When to talk to your DSO

Talk to your DSO before the number becomes urgent. Good trigger points include a job ending, a start date moving, uncertainty about unpaid work, a portal error, a STEM employer change, or a tracker result showing you are close to the limit. Bring a clean timeline with the exact dates and employer information.

If you are on STEM OPT, also ask whether the I-983 needs a new version or update. The unemployment day question and the training plan question often appear together, but they are not the same problem.
