How the OPT & STEM OPT Limits Work
F-1 students on post-completion Optional Practical Training (OPT) are limited to 90 days of unemployment. If you have an approved 24-month STEM OPT extension, that limit increases to a combined 150 days across your entire OPT + STEM OPT period. A day counts as unemployment any time you are not actively engaged in work related to your field of study — including gaps between jobs. Exceeding the limit can put your F-1 status out of compliance immediately.
