STEM OPT Unemployment Days Calculator
How to use a STEM OPT unemployment days calculator to track the combined 150-day limit across Initial OPT and STEM OPT.
Quick answer
A STEM OPT unemployment days calculator should count the full OPT plus STEM OPT timeline, not only the STEM extension period. The key output is the combined total used against the 150-day limit, plus how many days were used during Initial OPT before STEM started.
Why STEM OPT needs a combined calculator
STEM OPT students often think the extension creates a brand-new unemployment allowance. It does not work that way. The STEM OPT limit is combined with the unemployment days already used during post-completion OPT.
That is why a useful tracker needs both phases:
- Initial OPT EAD start and end dates
- STEM OPT extension dates, if approved
- Each qualifying employment period
- Gaps between jobs
- Remaining days against the combined 150-day limit
What to enter
Use dates from your EAD card, approval records, and employment documentation. Enter each job period based on the date the qualifying employment actually covers. If an employer onboarding date, payroll date, offer date, or SEVP Portal date is different, note the difference and ask your DSO which date should control.
Small date differences can change the unemployment count.
What the output means
The calculator can show used days, remaining days, and the phase where a gap occurred. A large number does not automatically mean your record is wrong, and a low number does not automatically mean every job qualifies. The output is only as reliable as the dates and employment assumptions entered.
When to ask your DSO
Ask your DSO if you are close to the limit, if a STEM employer changes, if the I-983 needs an update, if unpaid work is involved, or if the SEVP Portal record does not match your real timeline.
For STEM OPT, the unemployment question often overlaps with the I-983 training plan and employer eligibility. Do not treat the calculator as a substitute for school review.
