OPT EAD Card Delivery Timeline

What happens between OPT approval, EAD card production, mailing, and delivery, plus what to check if the card is delayed.

Quick answer

After OPT approval, the EAD card still has to be produced, mailed, and delivered. Some cards arrive quickly after approval, while others take longer. Track approval and delivery as separate milestones, especially if an employer start date, travel plan, or address change is involved.

The usual post-approval sequence

A clean sequence may look like this:

  • Case approved
  • Card was produced
  • Card was picked up or mailed
  • Card was delivered
  • Student physically receives the EAD

Not every account shows every step, and timing can vary. The key is to avoid treating "approved" and "delivered" as the same event.

What to check after approval

Confirm your mailing address, save the approval notice, monitor USCIS account updates, and watch for tracking information. If you live in shared housing, make sure the mailbox name and delivery process are reliable.

If your employer is waiting, give them the exact milestone instead of vague wording. "Approved, waiting for EAD delivery" is clearer than "done."

If the card is produced but not delivered

If the card was produced but you have no delivery, check whether a tracking number appears, whether USPS has a delivery scan, and whether the address on file is correct. If the card is marked delivered but missing, document the timeline quickly.

Travel before the EAD arrives

Travel after approval but before EAD delivery can create practical re-entry and employment-document questions. Your approval notice is not the same as the physical EAD card. If you must travel, confirm documents with your DSO before leaving.

Delivery timing and unemployment days

If your EAD start date has arrived but your job cannot start until the card arrives, the date gap may matter. The card delivery problem and unemployment-day problem are separate, but they can overlap.
